Meet Dr. Laura Costello
Why I Wrote PRETRIMESTER
I spent a year trying to get pregnant before I learned I wasn’t even ovulating.
I still remember leaving that appointment with a referral in my hand, wondering why no one had helped me understand what was happening. For years, my symptoms had been dismissed as “normal.”
What followed was years of endometriosis, infertility, IVF, and pregnancy loss. Even with my clinical background, I kept running into questions I hadn’t known to ask.
I’m Dr. Laura Costello, a Doctor of Physical Therapy with nearly two decades of experience in women’s health. But I’ve also been the woman in the waiting room, hoping for good news and asking what else she could be doing.
I wrote PRETRIMESTER for that woman. The one who wants to give herself and her future baby the best possible start, and who takes her health seriously.
It brings together the research, practical guidance, and lessons I learned the hard way, so you have the information I wish someone had given me.

Inside PRETRIMESTER
What You’ll Be Glad You Knew Sooner
Many women don’t learn what matters until they’ve been trying for a while. By then, they’re searching late at night, wishing someone had told them earlier.
PRETRIMESTER brings those answers forward. It’s a clear, evidence-informed guide to getting your body, mind and environment ready for pregnancy, so you know what deserves your attention now.
Know Your Body Before Another Cycle Passes
- Find your fertile window. Spot the real signs of ovulation and when to time sex, so you’re not guessing every month.
- Catch what needs a closer look. See which cycle changes and symptoms to bring up with your doctor now, instead of waiting and wondering if something’s off.
- It takes two. Learn what affects egg and sperm health, and why your partner’s health counts as much as yours.
Put Your Energy Where It Counts
You don’t need another list of everything to do. You need to know what’s worth doing.
- Cut through the supplement aisle. Figure out which nutrients and prenatals deserve a spot, and which trends you can skip.
- See the bigger picture. Understand how sleep, movement, gut health, and blood sugar all play a part, without overhauling your routine.
- Make simple swaps. Spot the products in your home and bathroom to replace first. No need to throw everything out.
When to Speak Up, and What to Ask
If something’s off, knowing when to ask can make a real difference.
- Understand the conditions that can get in the way. Learn about endometriosis, PCOS (now called PMOS), and the symptoms to bring to your next appointment.
- Recognize when it’s time for testing. Find out what fertility tests show and how to advocate for yourself if you feel brushed off.
- Walk into IVF and egg freezing conversations prepared. Understand what each involves and how to care for yourself through it.
Take Care of Yourself Along the Way
Because this is about more than your cycle or a positive test.
- Get through the waiting. Ease the stress of the two-week wait and the uncertainty, without blaming yourself for what you can’t control.
- Protect your relationships. Talk with your partner, set boundaries, and handle the “So when are you having kids?” questions.
- Find support if the path changes. Guidance through infertility, loss, and grief, with room left for hope.
It’s Not Just What You Learn. It’s When.
The months before conception are not just time spent waiting. They're time you can use to understand your health, ask important questions, and make informed decisions about what comes next.
You can't control exactly when pregnancy happens. But you deserve to know what matters while you have the opportunity to act.
